Earlier this month a few of us were invited to come check out the newly re-vamped Cheney Stadium in Tacoma to catch a Tacoma Rainiers game. I'm going to be completely honest, having grown up in the Seattle area, "Tacoma" was not exactly a destination. Since I moved back to WA three years ago, all I've been hearing is how Tacoma is up and coming and it's "actually really cute", and now it's that Cheney Stadium is "actually really cool".
Well folks, I'm here to tell you that the rumors are true. Described by Rainiers President Aaron Artman as "the boutique hotel of pro sports," that's exactly what it was. We had such a great experience on the Party Deck. We had a great view from above of the whole field, a bar at our disposal, great food options around us, and a front and center view of Mount Rainier herself.
I love going to Safeco for Mariners games, but this was a whole different experience. The game was sold out, and it never felt like we were being overrun with people. And it felt like we were being taken care of, rather than just one of thousands of people they're trying to serve as fast as they can.
Throw in amazing food options for me to stuff my face with (which they did), and I'm a happy camper. (Pro tip: get the cookie. When we were there it was up by the party deck, but ask anyone and they'll point you in the right direction). The hot dogs and Mac and cheese were also well worth it.
